History

  • Houston was officially recorded in 1853 and was named for Leonard Houston, one of the early settlers.
  • At one time Houston was booming. Businesses included: general stores, blacksmiths, doctors, saloons, drug store, mill, livestock stable, undertaker, and a country lawyer. These establishments are no longer operating in Houston.
  • Houston is fortunate that Salt Creek Winery opened nearby in 2010. This winery is known for winning awards in Indiana. The Blackberry is my personal favorite.
  • Houston is a place where you seem to go back in time and can escape from the fast-pace of city life.
  • A tiny village located in a valley surrounded by timbered hills whose autumn colors and inspiration are unmatched for scenic beauty and peaceful living.
  • I am proud to call Houston, Indiana my hometown.
